WHO/Europe has published a new report assessing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in health care across the 27 European Union Member States. The report shows that AI is becoming increasingly embedded in health systems, with all EU countries recognising its potential to improve patient care.

Nearly three quarters of EU Member States report using AI-assisted diagnostics, including tools for medical imaging, disease detection and clinical decision-making. In addition, 63% use chatbots to support patient engagement, while almost half have created dedicated roles for AI and data science in health.
The report underlines that responsible AI implementation requires strong workforce skills, transparent governance and public trust. WHO/Europe encourages governments to invest in AI education and training, involve health professionals, patients and the public in policy development, and establish centres of excellence to test technologies and share best practices.
