New Horizon Europe Call: Personalised Approaches to Reduce Adverse Drug Reactions

A new Horizon Europe call provides €38 million to support research into personalised approaches to improve medication safety and reduce adverse drug reactions in patients taking multiple medications. The call focuses on pharmacogenomics, biomarkers and digital technologies to enable safer, more effective and personalised treatment strategies.

On 29 October 2026, the European Commission opened the Horizon Europe call “Personalised approaches to reduce risks from Adverse Drug Reactions due to administration of multiple medications” (HORIZON-HLTH-2027-01-CARE-02). The call addresses the growing challenge of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) associated with polypharmacy, defined in this context as the concurrent use of three or more medicinal products. Such reactions can lead to serious health complications, hospitalisations and increased healthcare costs, particularly among patients with multiple chronic conditions.

The call aims to develop and implement personalised medicine approaches that improve medication management and reduce patient harm. Research proposals should investigate the potential of pharmacogenomics, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and other biomarkers to predict and prevent adverse drug reactions. They should also explore the use of digital technologies, including artificial intelligence, electronic health records and clinical decision-support systems, to support healthcare professionals in making safer and more informed treatment decisions.

Beyond technological development, the call emphasises the clinical implementation of personalised approaches. Projects are expected to generate evidence on the clinical utility and cost-effectiveness of biomarker-guided treatment strategies, address ethical and regulatory challenges, and develop approaches to integrate research results into routine healthcare practice.

Synergies with EP PerMed

The call explicitly encourages applicants to align their activities with existing EU-funded projects and partnerships, including the European Partnership for Personalised Medicine (EP PerMed) and Transforming Health and Care Systems (THCS). Such collaboration can strengthen synergies, avoid duplication of efforts and support the translation of personalised medicine research into healthcare practice.
