NGS/WGS-PGx aims to implement and expand the use of personalised medicine by transferring a clinically validated pharmacogenomics service from Zurich to Heidelberg through a structured twinning collaboration. The core objective is to enable routine, genetics-guided pharmacotherapy by integrating next-generation sequencing (NGS) and whole-genome sequencing (WGS)–based pharmacogenetic data into clinical decision-making. Rather than developing new technologies, the project focuses on adapting an existing, fully operational system to a new institutional setting, thereby building local capacity and ensuring sustainable implementation. Central to this effort is the strengthening of interdisciplinary collaboration between molecular pathology and clinical pharmacology, allowing genetic data to be effectively translated into actionable prescribing recommendations tailored to individual patients. The project also emphasises knowledge exchange through staff training, workshops, and hands-on experience in areas such as genomic analysis, variant interpretation, and clinical reporting. By harmonising workflows and standardising pharmacogenetic testing and consultation practices across institutions, the initiative aims to reduce variability in clinical approaches and improve consistency in patient care. Overall, the project seeks to enhance treatment safety and efficacy, reduce adverse drug reactions, and support more precise, evidence-based prescribing. In the longer term, it is intended to serve as a scalable model for broader implementation of pharmacogenomics and personalised medicine across healthcare systems, contributing to improved patient outcomes and more efficient use of healthcare resources.
