The EP PerMed podcast ‘The Science of You’ aims to inform and educate about personalised medicine and the potential benefits it can bring to society and patients.
Season 2

Four episodes. Four powerful stories of patients and former patients who have benefited from personalised medicine. Covering topics ranging from oncology and rare genetic disorders to preventive surgery and cardiovascular diseases, this podcast brings real human experiences to life, demonstrating how tailor-made therapies are transforming treatment into a more effective and informed process.
The second season of The Science of You explores personalised medicine and its advancements from a different perspective. At the heart of the narrative are the first-hand accounts of patients, family members and carers who have encountered personalised medicine.
The ‘The Science of You’ podcast is currently available on Spotify, Amazon Music and Apple Podcast.
S2 Episode 2 – Rare Genetic Diseases: the Story of Joe, Connie and their Family
Joe is a lively and joyful teenager from northern England. He loves Italy because it was here that he was cured of a rare genetic disease called metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD), the same disease that claimed the life of his little sister, Connie. In this episode, we follow Joe and his family’s story to explore the frontiers of personalised genetic therapy.
S2 Episode 1 – Tamara, Breast Cancer (BRCA) and Preventive Surgery
Tamara is a German nurse who has lived in Lisbon for more than twenty years. Cancer has been a recurring presence in her family, affecting three people on her father’s side as well as her mother. A chance encounter with a young patient prompts her to undergo genetic testing, perhaps saving her life and leading her to choose preventive surgery.
Season 1

On the surface, we’re all pretty similar. Two arms, two legs, a beating heart. If we zoom in on our DNA, we’ll find that 99.9% of it is the same for every single human on the planet. But it’s that tiny 0.1% that makes you, well, you. That’s the bit that determines how your body reacts to certain foods, how you process medicine, and even how you’re susceptible to certain diseases.
The same tiny 0.1% difference exists for the trillions of bacteria that live inside us. They also play a crucial role in how we digest foods, fight off infections, and even think and feel. Medicine is finally catching up to this idea, moving from a one-size-fits-all approach to something much more tailored – more you. This podcast series will explore the groundbreaking discoveries that are allowing us, through personalised medicine, to understand and harness these differences, transforming the way we approach medicine and healthcare.
S1 Episode 1 – The DNA Revolution
DNA is the blueprint of life. In this episode, we’ll trace the journey from the first sequencing of our genetic code to the game-changing implications this has for personalised medicine today.
Featuring interviews to: Aureliano Stingi (Polo Tecnologico Navacchio, Italy); Rachel Horton (University of Oxford, UK).
S1 Episode 2 – The Microbiome: your inner ecosystem
We’re hosts to trillions of bacteria that live inside of us, shaping our health in ways we’re only beginning to understand. Our cells are outnumbered by bacteria, and it turns out that just like our DNA, the makeup of our microbiome is uniquely ours. In this episode, we’ll explore how these microbes aren’t just along for the ride – they’re active players in our health story.
Featuring interviews to: Professor Emma Allen-Vercoe and Professor Nicola Segata.
S1 Episode 3 – Immunotherapy: Reprogramming the immune system
This episode will take you on a journey through immunotherapy, the quest to harness the power of our own immune system. Immunotherapy represents a paradigm shift in the treatment of diseases, particularly cancer. We will examine the origins of immunotherapy, its current applications, and how it is being tailored to individual patients as a personalised approach.
Featuring interviews to: Professor Michele Maio and Professor Mihai Netea.
S1 Episode 4 – Proteomics
If DNA is the blueprint, proteins are the builders, communicators and catalyzers. They’re the ones actually getting stuff done in your cells. Welcome to the world of proteomics – the study of all the proteins your body makes. Think of proteins as the building blocks and dynamic forces that make life possible, each one with its unique role and impact. This episode is all about how proteomics is helping us understand the complexity of diseases and opening up new doors for personalised treatment.
Featuring interviews to: Austin Argentieri and Michael Snyder.
